Diaper Changes

You may feel that you are changing diapers all the time! Healthy newborns often need 10 or more diaper changes daily.

Diaper changing tips:

  1. Change your baby’s diaper as soon as the diaper is wet or soiled. This will prevent diaper rash.
  2. Change your baby’s diaper in the middle of the night to prevent sleeping in a soiled or wet diaper all night.

What to expect at different ages:

  1. From birth to 1 month, your baby is likely to have 6+ wet diapers and 3-4 bowel movements, resulting in 10+ diaper changes per day.
  2. At 1 month and older, your baby is likely to have 4-6+ wet diapers and less than 3-4 bowel movements, resulting in 8-10 diaper changes per day.

When babies don’t soil or wet their diapers often, they may be dehydrated or constipated. Talk with your healthcare provider.
